B.A./M.A. Program

Students who are currently full-time undergraduates at NYU may continue their studies in Italian beyond their B.A. by enrolling in the fifth year B.A./M.A. Italian Studes Program. For full-time students in the College of Arts and Sciences, tuition for the fifth year in Florence is offered at a 50% discount and the application fee and GRE exams are waived. NYU students who are not in CAS and who are double majors or minoring in Italian cannot be considered for the BA/MA program.  However, they are strongly encouraged to speak with Italian Studies faculty about the possibility of doing the MA exclusively in Florence at a 30% discount.

Courses for the BA/MA program are taught by visiting NYU (Washington Square) professors, faculty at the University of Florence, and NYU in Florence faculty.  Additionally, customized apprenticeship opportunities in writing, art, and other fields are available to students in both Florence and New York. Graduates leave the program poised to enter into either additional graduate Ph.D. programs, or a position in areas such as journalism, publishing, international business and law.

Current majors and minors in Italian at NYU are encouraged to begin thinking about the BA/MA program in their junior year, and should plan to register for one or two graduate-level seminars before graduating. These courses must be in addition to the 128 credits that CAS students need for the BA degree; thus students will graduate as BA's with a total of 132 or 136 credits. They should also contact Professor Jane Tylus (jt76@nyu.,edu), departmental liaison to the villa program, and Professor Virginia Cox, Director of Graduate Studies (virginia.cox@nyu.edu). For further information on the M.A. students are also encourages to consult with the advising staff in the Office of Pre- Professional Advising in Silver (9th floor).

The application packet includes the application form (available at 901 Silver), two letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Applications should be sent directly to the Office of Pre- Professional Advising at 901 Silver.
